MOVIE NEWS – There’s trouble in the air in Mel Gibson’s upcoming movie, Flight Risk. The freshly released trailer promises a gripping, action-packed aerial adventure.
Mark Wahlberg takes a surprising turn as Darryl Booth, a hitman masquerading as a pilot. His passengers include Air Marshal Madelyn Harris (Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery) and a man named Winston (That ’70s Show‘s Topher Grace). Chaos ensues when Winston discovers Booth’s true identity. The adrenaline-fueled trailer claims the movie is so immersive that “you don’t watch it; you experience it.”
Wahlberg’s last villainous role was in 1996’s Fear, where he played a jealous teen boyfriend. Reflecting on his new role, Wahlberg stated:
“At first, audiences will think, ‘Here comes Mark to save the day,’ but 15 minutes in, they’ll realize it’s not what they expected.”
This marks Wahlberg and Gibson’s third collaboration (Daddy’s Home 2, Father Stu), but their first actor-director venture. Gibson, who also produced, praised Wahlberg’s performance (via USA Today):
“It’s about Mark embracing his dark side while juggling his empire and family life. He’s found the essence of a bald-headed sociopath.”
Mel Gibson Returns to Directing with Passion
Flight Risk is Gibson’s first directorial project since 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge. Fans won’t have to wait long for his next work, as The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection begins production in early 2025. The sequel revisits Jesus (played again by Jim Caviezel) after his crucifixion and delves into the aftermath. Written by Gibson and Randall Wallace, the script may include supernatural elements.
Despite controversies, Gibson remains a celebrated filmmaker. Braveheart won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director, while Hacksaw Ridge earned six nominations. His track record amplifies anticipation for Flight Risk.
Jared Rosenberg penned the screenplay for Flight Risk, with Gibson, John Davis, John Fox, and Bruce Davey producing. Executive producers include Alex Lebovici, Jenny Hinkey, and several others.
Flight Risk lands in theaters on January 24, 2025.
