The new DOOM only appeared briefly, but it’s enough to impress, as it aims to set a new standard for ray tracing technology. The Dark Ages is among the first games to utilize NVIDIA’s groundbreaking DLSS 4.
One of the standout reveals at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 was DOOM: The Dark Ages, the latest chapter in the DOOM Slayer saga. This time, the story delves into the origins of the relentless beast. With two critically acclaimed installments under its belt, this prequel from id Software is anticipated to launch in 2025. While an official release date remains unknown, CES 2025 gave fans a glimpse of the game, showcasing visuals so impressive they’ll make you forget about flu season.
During NVIDIA’s presentation of DLSS 4, short clips of the game highlighted its dark, detailed environments and the protagonist’s medieval-inspired design. Additionally, the footage showed the DOOM Slayer leading what appears to be a group of Night Sentinels in their unending war against demonic forces.
Though the teaser was just seconds long, the visual quality was striking, akin to what fans saw in DOOM Eternal. NVIDIA confirmed that the game utilizes id Tech’s latest iteration—likely the seventh version—also used in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Billy Khan, id Software’s director of engine technology, described The Dark Ages as a push to elevate DOOM’s visual storytelling, stating that DLSS 4 represents “a groundbreaking leap in ray tracing capabilities.”
The game is set to showcase NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series GPUs and their advanced ray tracing features. According to NVIDIA’s blog, The Dark Ages will be among the first titles to introduce a next-generation ray tracing technology that offers even greater immersion. However, to fully experience these advancements, players will need both an RTX 50 GPU and DLSS 4.
Beyond its technical achievements, DOOM: The Dark Ages signals a new era for the legendary series. It continues the strong collaboration between id Software and NVIDIA, promising innovation for both fans and developers. With a release date expected in 2025, the game will arrive on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
