Long-Awaited Follow-Up to One of Nicolas Cage’s Best Movies Moves Forward

MOVIE NEWS – The crime drama Lord of War, one of Nicolas Cage’s most iconic films, is finally getting a sequel. Although announced years ago, little has been shared about the project since then. Now, Nosferatu and John Wick: Chapter 4 actor Bill Skarsgård, who will play the son of Cage’s character, arms dealer Yuri Orlov, has revealed that filming for Lord of War 2 is planned to begin this year.

In a recent interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Skarsgård expressed his admiration for Cage, whom he called a “legend,” and teased details about the script and what fans can expect from this long-awaited sequel.

“Nicolas Cage is a legend. And it looks like it’s happening next year (2025)… It’s a great script, and I think it’ll be fun. The character I play is a charismatic fing asshole. You’ve seen the first one… It’s so cynical, satirical, dark, and full of terrible people, but it’s also a dark comedy. I love that. I love laughing at awful people… I think it’s going to be a great ride.”

What Can Fans Expect from Lords of War?

Released in 2005, Lord of War was written and directed by Andrew Niccol. The film follows Yuri Orlov’s 20-year journey as an arms dealer who exploits the tensions of the post-Cold War era and the rise of global terrorism. Starring Jared Leto, Bridget Moynahan, Ethan Hawke, and Eamonn Walker alongside Cage, the movie initially received mixed reviews but has since gained a strong cult following.

This is reflected in Rotten Tomatoes scores, where critics gave it a 62%, but audiences rated it an impressive 85%. The critics’ consensus notes, “While Lord of War is an intelligent examination of the gun trade, its scattershot plotting makes it hard to connect.”

Skarsgård’s involvement in the sequel, likely titled Lords of War, was first confirmed in 2023. Variety shared a synopsis for the sequel, stating:

“Lords of War sees Yuri Orlov (Cage), the world’s most infamous arms dealer, discover he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård), who is determined to outdo him. Anton builds a mercenary army to fight in America’s Middle East conflicts, igniting a fierce rivalry that pits father against son.”

Returning writer-director Andrew Niccol added, “There is so much more to explore with these characters. As Plato said, ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m eager to spend more time with Yuri Orlov, the charming devil, and now his illegitimate son—who, unsurprisingly, is illegitimate in every way.”
