Burning Sword: Death Sun: A Free Hack and Slash with Sekiro-Level Difficulty

You can now try a hack-and-slash game for free, offering Sekiro-like difficulty and insane kung-fu action. Welcome to Burning Sword: Death Sun, a title from Thailand’s Nomadic Games that prioritizes exhilarating action over RPG elements.

Asian countries have become powerhouses for creating video games with high expectations, and Thailand and South Korea are emerging as dynamic players in this market. Among them, Thailand shines with Burning Sword: Death Sun, a hack-and-slash game inspired by Chinese mythology and the WuXia genre. The game not only looks stunning but also offers a free demo for PC players to dive into right now.

Developed by Nomadic Games, the game transports players to an ancient martial arts world shaped by the WuXia aesthetic, similar to Phantom Blade Zero. The narrative follows Zhang Yixian, a classic revenge-driven hero. After his master’s death at the hands of the kingdom’s ruling martial arts sects, Zhang returns from hell to fight his way through them and confront Gao Tian Qi, the leader of the Scarlet Dust Demon cult. While the story might feel familiar, Burning Sword: Death Sun’s gameplay elevates it far beyond its narrative.

A Challenging Hack and Slash Powered by Unreal Engine 5

Nomadic Games has poured significant effort into the game mechanics. The gameplay blends the frantic action of button-mashing martial arts combat with the strategic complexity of a soulslike, though without diving deep into RPG elements. While comparisons can be made to modern titles like Black Myth: Wukong, the action feels closer to Stellar Blade, which makes it all the more exciting to play.

The core gameplay involves taking on the masters of various martial arts sects in a series of intense boss-rush encounters, wrapped in a rich narrative. The developers have made it clear that this will be a challenging and demanding experience, adhering to the core principles of the hack-and-slash genre.

Despite its polished visuals and engaging gameplay, Burning Sword: Death Sun has yet to receive a release date. According to Steam, the game is planned for launch in the first quarter of the year, with a free demo already available for players to sample its gameplay. As for a console release, the developers haven’t confirmed anything yet, but there’s potential for the game to appear on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 in the future.
