Netflix’s The Old Guard 2: Another Setback for the Highly Anticipated Sequel

MOVIE NEWS – One of Netflix’s most awaited action sequels has unfortunately hit another roadblock, as the comic book adaptation, The Old Guard 2, faces further delays. According to World of Reel, the action-packed follow-up, which will feature Charlize Theron reprising her role as Andromache “Andy” of Scythia, is scheduled for “additional photography” in “early summer.” This development suggests that the movie is unlikely to debut on Netflix anytime soon.

Released in 2020 and inspired by the graphic novel by Greg Rucka, The Old Guard tells the tale of a mercenary team that has lived for centuries due to their immortality and regenerative abilities. The plot revolves around their struggle to protect their secret from being exposed while battling to retain their freedom.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, written by Greg Rucka, and starring Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, The Old Guard garnered critical acclaim (earning an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes) and was viewed by an impressive 72 million households in its first four weeks, making it one of Netflix’s most successful launches.

Could The Old Guard 2 Be at Risk of Cancellation?

Despite the remarkable viewership, some fans fear that The Old Guard 2 might suffer the same fate as Halle Berry’s unreleased sci-fi film, The Mothership, which was canceled. However, Netflix has already invested significant resources into the sequel, including reshoots last October, reducing the likelihood of a similar outcome.

What’s causing the delay? Returning star Charlize Theron shed light on the situation:

“Netflix underwent a major transition, and we got stuck in that. Our post-production shut down about five weeks in. They were going through a lot of changes, which I completely understand. We eventually picked things back up, and I’m thrilled about it. It’s going to be fantastic. This film means a lot to us, and I only wanted to make it if we could ensure it would be amazing. I really love this movie.”

A Bigger and Better Sequel

Plot details remain under wraps, but The Old Guard 2 is likely based on the 2020 comic book sequel, The Old Guard Book Two: Force Multiplied. In this follow-up, Andy confronts “the sins of the past.” Here’s the official synopsis:

“When you’ve waged war as long as Andy and her squad, your hands are bound to be stained with blood. Now, the time has come to face the sins of the past. As Nile struggles to find her place within the team, someone Andy least expected to see again resurfaces, challenging everything she believes in and the team’s mission.”

The sequel will see Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Marwan Kenzari reprising their roles, with new additions including Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) and Henry Golding (Snake Eyes).
