Resident Evil 2’s iPhone Version Flops: Another Miss for Capcom on Apple Devices

HANDHELD NEWS – Unsurprisingly, Resident Evil 2 has been a commercial failure on iPhones, marking yet another disappointing launch for Capcom on Apple platforms. Sales estimates show the title has fallen far short of expectations.

Capcom’s latest attempt to bring one of its flagship AAA titles to iPhone appears to have gone poorly. Released on December 10 for select Apple devices, Resident Evil 2 has reportedly struggled commercially, falling well below expectations. This adds to the growing list of underwhelming launches from the Japanese developer on Apple-branded hardware.

Data from Appmagic (via Mobilegamer.biz) reveals that Resident Evil 2 has generated just over $100,000 in revenue since its launch. The game is restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPads or Macs equipped with M1 chips or later. As noted on the site, players can initially explore a demo-like portion of the game. Afterward, a message prompts them to purchase the full version via the App Store.

Between December 10 and January 8, when the game was discounted by $10 on iPhones, it earned approximately $95,000 (roughly 9,500 purchases). Since January 9, the game has been sold at full price, generating over $7,000 in revenue (around 175 purchases).

Sales for Resident Evil, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and Death Stranding: “Far from a success”

As mentioned earlier, this isn’t the first time AAA titles have underperformed in the iPhone and iOS ecosystem. Titles like Resident Evil 4 Remake, Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 7, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage have all delivered results that were “far from successful.” Despite these challenges, Capcom went ahead with launching Resident Evil 2 on Apple devices. Whether the company will continue with this strategy or abandon AAA releases for Apple products remains to be seen.
