The current head of Warner Bros. Games is stepping down and will remain on the board until a replacement is found, making things easier for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).
WBD has announced that David Haddad will no longer lead the company’s interactive entertainment division after 12 years, but will remain with the company for the next three months while WBD searches for a successor. JB Perrette, WBD’s CEO and president of global streaming and gaming, outlined his thoughts in an internal memo, and Haddad told Variety that he is proud of what he has accomplished at the company. It has been a pleasure to work on iconic franchises and he will continue to support the team in their future plans. He has not yet said where his career will take him.
Here’s Perrette’s internal memo: “On behalf of David Zaslav and all of us at WBD, I want to express my deepest gratitude to David for his phenomenal work and passion during his time here. With the support and incredible efforts of this entire team, David has led WB Games to numerous accomplishments over the years, both creatively and commercially. His vision, talent and passion have helped build one of the most successful and admired game companies in the industry, as well as navigate some of the biggest changes and challenges.
From transforming a physical software company into a digital-first game company, to organically building a successful free-to-play mobile business, to developing and publishing multiple billion-dollar games and franchises – including Hogwarts Legacy, Game of Thrones Conquest, and Golf Clash – to delighting more Mortal Kombat fans than at any time in the franchise’s 30-plus year history, the journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.
David has thoughtfully and purposefully chosen a time when our release schedule is lighter, which will help minimize disruption to our ongoing projects and strategic plans, and allow this team to smoothly prepare for their next record-breaking title. David has also graciously agreed to stay on for the next three months as we begin a search to fill this important leadership role and will help ensure a smooth transition. This transition period will also provide me with additional opportunities to work directly with the Games leadership, and I look forward to becoming even more immersed in this incredible business with all of you.
I fully understand that change, especially after 12 years with the same leader and boss, can be hard and uncomfortable (in our industry and at WBD, we have certainly had our fair share). But it also brings opportunity, a chance for healthy fresh perspectives, and the ability to create the next incredible chapter for our fans and our company…and I’m excited to embark on it with you,” Perrette wrote.
It’s likely that Haddad’s gone due to the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
