MOVIE NEWS – Will Smith has finally broken his silence on the cryptic Matrix teasers he’s been sharing, and the reveal is either a clever twist or a letdown, depending on your expectations. While fans speculated everything from a franchise reboot to a Super Bowl ad, the truth is Smith will appear in a Matrix-themed music video for Beautiful Scars, his collaboration with Big Sean.
Smith shared the cover art for the track, set to drop on January 30, where he appears as Neo alongside Big Sean, who channels a Morpheus-inspired character. The cryptic teasers began on January 6, when Smith posted a video stating:
“In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith turned it down, opting instead for Wild Wild West, which felt like a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?”
The post immediately ignited fan debates. Was Smith teasing a role in the upcoming Matrix film currently in development, or was he starring in a Super Bowl ad? The idea of him joining the franchise was quickly dismissed when Variety confirmed that Smith had no involvement in the new movie. This left many assuming the teasers were part of an ad campaign. Few expected a music project.
Will Smith’s Hollywood Comeback
Nearly two years have passed since Will Smith faced widespread backlash following the infamous Oscars slap in 2023. The incident put his career in jeopardy, with projects like Bad Boys: Ride or Die placed on hold.
Fast forward to 2025, and Smith is firmly back in the spotlight. In addition to a potential fifth Bad Boys installment, he’s set to return to the I Am Legend franchise alongside Michael B. Jordan. While The Matrix 5 isn’t on his radar, Smith’s music video offers fans a glimpse of what could have been if he’d taken the role of Neo. And who knows? If the video creates enough buzz, the door to The Matrix could reopen for Smith in some form, even if it’s not as the lead in the next film.
