Moon Studios Boss Predicts End of Sony Console Exclusives [VIDEO]

We’ve already written about the Austrian studio a few days ago (What is Thomas Mahler’s studio working on after No Rest for the Wicked?), but let’s take another look at Moon Studios…

Moon Studios founder Mahler explained on Twitter why he decided not to work with Microsoft (Xbox Game Studios) on the team’s next game: “I know some people always want me to join the console wars, but I strongly believe Phil Spencer has the right approach. We decided a few years ago not to make No Rest for the Wicked on Microsoft because we couldn’t ship it for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch at that time, and knowing how important multiplayer and cross-play would be, we decided to partner with Take-Two (Private Division) instead. In my emails to Phil over the years, I’ve always brought up how crazy it would have been if you could only watch certain DVDs on Sony players, while others would have required a Samsung player, and so on. I think we can all agree that would have been crazy for movies, so why are games any different?”

It’s a valid point. He then went on to say that the hardware on the consoles is basically the same, so he doesn’t see much point in exclusivity for that reason: “The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 have basically the same hardware these days, so porting from one platform to another isn’t that big of a deal anymore. Their controllers are largely the same. The Steam Boxes are the same. Not supporting all of these devices makes no sense, because you just cut off a huge chunk of your potential audience. Consoles have been stuck with the same 100-150 million players for over two decades. If we want the industry to grow, we need to make it easier for everyone to access the content. Right now, the price of entry is still too high, with people having to buy a $500 box just to get their game on,” Mahler added.

Mahler went on to praise Spencer and Xbox’s strategy: “Ultimately, they want anyone with a screen and a controller to be able to play all games, to finally break through that barrier and make games available to everyone. I’d be surprised if Sony doesn’t end up with the same strategy. People should buy the device they like best, but then they should have access to all the content. And yes, Nintendo will continue to do its own thing because Nintendo is Nintendo and that’s okay. Rooting for one giant corporation to sell more boxes over another seems fantastically pointless to me – we should all just share the love of games!”

Microsoft started opening the door to others last February, which is how Sea of Thieves came to PlayStation 5, or Hi-Fi Rush, for example. So it’s only a matter of time, Mahler says, before Sony starts porting its other products besides MLB The Show baseball games to Xbox…
