MOVIE NEWS – A fantasy RPG that aims to dominate 2025 hasn’t even been released yet, but its film adaptation has already been announced. The studio behind the Sonic movies will bring Expedition 33 to the big screen. Story Kitchen, founded by a Sonic producer and the John Wick screenwriter, is developing a live-action adaptation of Clair Obscur.
Among the most anticipated RPGs of 2025—highlighted in our ranking just a few weeks ago—Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stands out as one of the top contenders. Developed by indie studio Sandfall Interactive and inspired by classic Japanese RPGs, the game has already captured players’ imaginations with its twisted Belle Époque aesthetic, a stellar cast featuring Jennifer English and Charlie Cox (Daredevil), and promising gameplay. The hype is so high that a movie has already been announced. That’s right—the game hasn’t even launched yet, but its creators are confident enough to take it to cinemas.
The first title from the French team Sandfall Interactive, Expedition 33 was one of the most exciting projects unveiled in 2024. Many assumed that, given its ambition, it wouldn’t arrive until 2026 or later, but Xbox featured it prominently at its latest event. During Xbox Developer_Direct, the studio confirmed that the RPG is set to launch on Xbox Series, PS5, and PC on April 24, 2025. Now, just months before release, and without the full story even being revealed, its developers have confirmed a film adaptation.
The Movie Will Be Produced by Sonic‘s Producer
According to Variety, the film is still in early production, with no cast or director attached yet, but the studio behind it is already confirmed: Story Kitchen. Founded in 2022, this company specializes in adapting video games into films and television. It has played a key role in the Sonic movie trilogy—thanks to Dmitri Johnson, who helped bring Sonic to the big screen and is also the founder of Story Kitchen. The company is also working on film adaptations of Sifu and Dredge.
Guillaume Broche, CEO of Sandfall Interactive, stated that the collaboration will allow the game’s universe to expand beyond the interactive medium while staying true to the studio’s original vision. However, it remains unclear whether the film will directly follow the game’s story—where Expedition 33 fights to stop the Painter, a divine entity condemning humanity to destruction—or if it will explore other expeditions within the Clair Obscur universe.
While no release date for the film has been announced yet, Clair Obscur’s deep ties to cinema—especially with its cast including Andy Serkis and Charlie Cox—make it an ideal candidate for a live-action adaptation. Meanwhile, RPG fans are eagerly awaiting Sandfall Interactive’s game launch in April 2025.
