TECH NEWS – The meeting between Donald Trump and Jensen Huang could outline how the AI market will evolve (at least in the US).
The Nvidia chief had already expressed his desire to meet with Donald Trump at CES when the GeForce RTX 5000 graphics cards were unveiled, but that didn’t happen when the US president was inaugurated, but what goes around comes around. Nvidia has a significant role to play in how the US handles its AI ambitions, and the Huang-Trump meeting could shape how the US government develops policy.
This will allow America to maintain its dominance in AI (although DeepSeek will have a few more words to say about that…) as China has also started to ramp up its computing capabilities. According to the Financial Times, the meeting took place yesterday at the White House and was planned before the Chinese AI miracle DeepSeek burst into the public eye (and caused Nvidia to lose 17% of its stock market value in a single day, or $600 billion…), and because the Chinese AI model shows similar results with much less computing power, many investors in the industry have begun to have doubts.
DeepSeek has shaken up the AI industry, losing $2 trillion in market capitalization on its debut on the US stock market, simply because DeepSeek’s R1 model has similar capabilities to OpenAI’s GPT o1, but presumably with lower computational costs. Trump has recently mentioned that his goal is to make America a leader in AI, and with the recent $500 billion Stargate initiative, it seems clear that the US has no plans to back down.
As for the meeting between Huang and Trump, the main topic was supposed to be AI and how to ensure that the core technology stays in the US. Another important factor was likely to be the discussion of further restrictions on China’s access to Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI chips, and with rumors of further sanctions being introduced, this was also likely to be discussed.
Incidentally, after China, Canada and Mexico, Trump would also impose protective tariffs on the European Union. How will this reduce US inflation?
