Xbox Everywhere? Microsoft’s New Strategy Could Change the Game Industry

“Xbox games can and will be cross-platform.” Microsoft’s evolving business model suggests more Xbox titles will arrive on PS5 and Switch 2. With increasing rumors, journalist Tom Warren believes Halo and Gears could soon land on PlayStation.

A few years ago, the idea of Microsoft publishing its first-party games on rival platforms like the PS5 or Nintendo Switch seemed unthinkable. Yet today, Sony’s console is benefitting the most from Xbox’s shift in strategy, as Microsoft pushes to expand its audience beyond its own hardware. Phil Spencer has already confirmed that when Switch 2 launches, Xbox will support the console with its games. This raises a major question: What does the future hold?

Just days ago, Microsoft shocked fans by announcing Forza Horizon 5 for PS5. The game is set to launch in spring 2025 and will include all content available on PC and Xbox Series X|S, along with additional updates across all platforms. Given that this is one of Xbox Game Studios’ flagship franchises, it wouldn’t be surprising if Forza Horizon 5 also makes its way to Switch 2 once that console hits the market.

The Next Phase of Xbox

Many players believe this is just the beginning of a major shift, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Halo and Gears making their way to PlayStation—a scenario that seemed impossible just a few years ago. Over the past few hours, speculation has intensified over which Xbox games could land on PS5. The Verge journalist Tom Warren recently stated on X/Twitter that Microsoft is entering a new era, positioning itself as the largest game publisher in the world.

“I see people are surprised at the idea of Halo and Gears coming to PS5. I reported last year that Microsoft was considering it. The new reality is that Xbox games can and will be cross-platform, and Microsoft has made that even clearer in recent weeks,” Warren explained.

Phil Spencer has also emphasized that more Xbox games will be coming to PS5 and other consoles. Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reaffirmed at the latest shareholder meeting that the company is focused on ensuring long-term growth in gaming by prioritizing high-margin content and services to boost profitability.
