David Lynch Nearly Made a Movie with One of the Biggest Pop Icons Ever

MOVIE NEWS – The entertainment world suffered a devastating loss on January 15 with the passing of legendary director David Lynch. Known for films like Twin Peaks and The Elephant Man, Lynch collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry. However, one major star never got the chance to work with him. Few figures dominated pop culture in the ’80s and ’90s quite like Madonna, but despite multiple opportunities, Lynch never managed to bring the singer-turned-actress into one of his projects.

During that time, Madonna took on memorable roles in films like A League of Their Own, proving that she had at least some acting ability. However, for one reason or another, any plans involving Lynch never materialized.

In an interview with Empire, writer Barry Gifford shared some insight into what the film starring Madonna might have been about: “I wrote a story about a woman working in a rural bar who had conflicts with the men around her. There was also another project involving a battery that could last forever—it had something to do with aliens.” Unfortunately, Madonna has largely distanced herself from acting in recent years, and with Lynch’s passing, the chances of this idea ever coming to life have all but disappeared.

“David and I discussed many projects that never saw the light of day. One of them was meant to star Madonna. This was after Wild at Heart; [producer] Monty Montgomery wanted us to come up with a story that she could be in.”

Madonna’s Acting Career Has Always Been Controversial

Not everyone in Hollywood has been keen on Madonna’s acting career. Broadway icon and Agatha All Along star Patti LuPone is one of the most vocal critics of the singer’s performances. During a 2017 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, LuPone didn’t hold back, calling Madonna a “movie killer” and claiming she was “dead behind the eyes”. She wasn’t alone in her criticism.

Meryl Streep also took a jab at Madonna in an interview with The New York Times, stating that she could “rip her throat out” and that she “can sing better than Madonna, if that counts for anything.” Perhaps a role in a David Lynch film could have shifted public perception of Madonna’s acting skills. However, considering she hasn’t appeared in a live-action major motion picture in two decades, it’s unlikely that she’ll ever shake off that reputation.
