The creators of Until Dawn are back with an intense sci-fi thriller. The trailer delivers an unsettling atmosphere and gripping action. Directive 8020 finally reveals more about its chilling story, and we now have a confirmed release date: it’s coming this fall!
Supermassive Games, the developers behind Until Dawn, used the PS5 State of Play event to unveil the release date for their upcoming horror-sci-fi game, Directive 8020. Set to launch later this year, the game blends the relentless tension of survival horror with high-stakes decision-making and a branching narrative—exactly what the studio is known for.
A Marvel Star Takes the Lead
In just over a minute and a half, Directive 8020 showcases an eerie, suspense-filled atmosphere and introduces a familiar face. Lashana Lynch, known from The Marvels, takes the lead role as Young, a “revolutionary astronaut.” Supermassive Games’ latest trailer gives us a glimpse into the eerie halls of the spaceship Cassiopeia, revealing crew members, haunting environments, gruesome death scenes, and a menacing alien threat.
“At Supermassive Games, we’ve been working on crafting a narrative experience that merges sci-fi exploration with chilling horror, where every choice you make could lead to a disastrous death,” says Will Doyle, creative director at the studio, in a statement shared via the PlayStation blog.
In Directive 8020, players take control of five crew members aboard the Cassiopeia as their deep-space expedition takes a terrifying turn. “As paranoia and fear rise, trust begins to erode. With their lives in your hands, your decisions will determine not only the fate of the crew but that of all humanity,” adds Supermassive Games.
Fans of the British studio will be pleased—Directive 8020 retains the signature branching narratives, impossible moral choices, and intense QTEs that define Supermassive’s work. However, the gameplay has been redesigned, polished, and refined to create an even more intense horror experience. When does it launch? October 2 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
