MOVIE NEWS – It could have been legendary. The trick wouldn’t have lasted more than a few hours, but Fede Álvarez’s idea to mislead Alien fans could have been a marketing masterstroke.
It never came to be, but now I can’t shake the thought of what might have been: what if Alien: Romulus had been released without revealing its true identity? Unfortunately, like so many bold ideas, it didn’t work out.
A Spoiled Surprise
As Álvarez explained in an exclusive interview with Collider, the concept for Alien: Romulus emerged while Ridley Scott was developing Alien: Covenant. At that time, discussions were already underway about the franchise’s future. When Álvarez was asked what kind of film he would like to make, he pitched something radically different—yet still rooted in the universe. Ultimately, Alien: Romulus became a tribute to the franchise’s most iconic moments, but there was a truly ambitious idea behind it:
Sadly, the secret didn’t last long. As soon as details leaked, fans quickly connected the dots and realized Álvarez’s film was indeed part of the legendary sci-fi horror saga. While the surprise could have generated an instant media frenzy, the fact that it was an Alien movie was already established, robbing it of the impact Álvarez had envisioned.
An Intriguing Take
Even though the film never managed to execute its original trick, Alien: Romulus still presents an intriguing premise. Rather than serving as a direct sequel, it acts as a standalone story within the same universe, introducing fresh characters and scenarios. If you’re a fan of the Alien series and crave something different, don’t miss Alien: Romulus, now streaming on Disney+ alongside the rest of the saga.
