Last week’s broadcast had the highest number of concurrent viewers ever for Sony, so something finally happened for the company this year.
According to Streams Charts, the February 12th broadcast averaged 1.8 million viewers across all broadcasts (since there were Japanese language broadcasts and also on Twitch). According to the publication, the number of concurrent viewers peaked at 2.18 million, which is unprecedented as no State of Play broadcast has ever broken the 2 million viewer mark.
The main broadcast on the PlayStation channel had 656,000 concurrent viewers, but according to Streams Charts, those who responded to the State of Play live stream pushed that figure higher, so the audience played a huge part in Sony’s success. The stats also show that this was the first time a State of Play had received over 1,000 YouTube and Twitch streams, so it’s fair to say that there was a lot of interest in the upcoming games for PlayStation 5.
Several popular outlets reacted to State of Play, including Asmongold, xQc, HasanAbi, and Maximillian_Dood, who are well known in the English-speaking world, and other publications also followed Sony’s show. Streams Charts points out that although the vast majority of these 1,000 channels reached less than 1,000 viewers each, they all contributed to the 2 million milestone. Last week’s State of Play also featured a number of new game announcements, as well as new information on previously announced games. There were quite a lot to digest, so it was a surprisingly good broadcast by Sony.
The biggest surprise was Housemarque’s new game Saros, but there was no gameplay in this demo video. There was also a release date for Borderlands 4, a remaster of Days Gone and a new trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
