Sony Faces Lawsuit! PlayStation Hit with Class Action Over “Artificially High” PS Store Prices

“In the EU, it is illegal for large companies to abuse their position to make more profits at the expense of consumers. However, Sony does not fully comply with these rules.”
A Dutch organization has filed a lawsuit against Sony for keeping PS Store prices “artificially high.”

The PlayStation Store has become Sony’s primary digital marketplace, serving millions of gamers who purchase games, expansions, and additional content for the PS4 and PS5. While it offers a seamless and convenient shopping experience, its pricing strategy has drawn criticism over the years. Now, Sony is facing yet another legal challenge—this time from the Netherlands.

Sony Sued Over PlayStation Store Pricing

The Dutch consumer advocacy group Massaschade & Consument has filed a class action lawsuit against Sony, accusing the company of maintaining “artificially high prices” on the PlayStation Store. The lawsuit alleges that Sony is abusing its market dominance by restricting digital game sales to its own platform, effectively eliminating price competition.

As a result, prices have remained high, with the lawsuit stating that “you are paying too much for PlayStation games” due to what’s being called the “Sony tax.” The organization argues that Dutch consumers are entitled to financial compensation and is urging players to join the class action lawsuit by signing up through an online form. Sony has faced similar accusations before—most notably in the UK, where the company is fighting a legal battle over nearly $8 billion in potential fines.

The lawsuit outlines Sony’s alleged violations regarding its handling of the PlayStation Store. “In the EU, it is illegal for large companies to abuse their position to make more profit at the expense of consumers. However, Sony does not fully comply with these rules. When you buy a digital game or in-game content, Sony ensures that you can only purchase it through its own PlayStation Store. This allows Sony to control the market and maintain artificially high prices. As a result, you pay more without receiving anything extra in return. This is also known as the Sony tax.”
