MOVIE NEWS – ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ just tanked at the box office with one of Marvel’s biggest drops. Only two movies dropped more during their second weekend in theaters. The consolation is that it has continued to occupy the number 1 spot at the US box office.
Marvel’s golden years are long gone, but the phenomenal success of last year’s ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ made it clear that audiences still respond when they’re given something they like. It’s becoming increasingly clear that that’s not the case with ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, which suffered one of Marvel’s biggest box office drops in its second weekend in theaters.
To put it in numbers, ‘Captain America 4’ has added $28.2 million in the United States, which represents a drop of 68.1% compared to the data of its premiere. An alarming drop, since in addition the data of its first weekend were not good enough to cushion the blow. In fact, there are only two Marvel films that suffered a bigger drop: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and ‘The Marvels’.
Worrying Decline
Specifically, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ dropped 69.9%, while ‘The Marvels’ sank with a drop of 78.1%. Luckily, there is something that plays in favor of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ concerning those two titles: the film directed by Julius Onah is much cheaper.
‘Captain America 4’ had a budget of $180 million, a figure that is not low at all. However, it is significantly less than the $330 million of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and the $307.3 million of ‘The Marvels’. Neither of them were able to make a profit in theaters, something that is not yet ruled out that could happen with the show starring Anthony Mackie.
That said, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ has maintained its number 1 position in the United States, and these figures are also provisional, so the drop could be slightly smaller. However, not much is going to change, but it could end up improving the 67.8% drop for ‘Black Widow’, the 67.7% drop for ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ or the 67.5% drop for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.
