CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski believes that Xbox Game Pass is a crucial part of the platform’s success, making it more appealing and competitive. The head of Lords of the Fallen developer CI Games recently shared his thoughts on Microsoft’s subscription service and how major publishers view its impact.
Xbox Game Pass has become one of the most influential subscription services in gaming today. With its continuously growing library and the promise of day-one access to Xbox exclusives, Microsoft has built a subscriber base of over 30 million players. However, opinions on the service remain divided, as not every studio or publisher sees it as beneficial.
While smaller independent studios appreciate the exposure and player reach that Game Pass offers, larger publishers remain skeptical about its profitability. Marek Tyminski recently addressed this issue, noting that some major companies, like Take-Two Interactive, are unwilling to launch their titles on the platform due to financial concerns.
Why Game Pass Is an Essential Part of Xbox’s Strategy
Despite skepticism from some industry leaders, Tyminski argues that Game Pass plays a key role in making the Xbox platform more attractive to gamers. “The CEO of Take-Two mentioned that while a franchise like Call of Duty could help Game Pass grow for a time, Take-Two itself chooses not to include its latest titles because they prioritize financial sustainability. This approach makes sense for publishers who can fully fund their games and want to maintain their long-term value,” he explained.
However, he also pointed out the strategic advantages of Game Pass for Microsoft. “It’s clear that Xbox will continue adding new releases to the service because this approach strengthens the platform’s appeal and competitiveness. Compared to other ecosystems, where access to new games often comes with a high price tag, Game Pass offers a low barrier of entry, attracting a much wider audience.” Notably, Lords of the Fallen is currently available on Game Pass, which has likely helped the soulslike game expand its player base significantly.
