Survival horror is going through a new golden age. While the genre has never lost its significance, in the last five years, many projects have sought to reshape its foundations and introduce wildly experimental ideas. One of them is Void Martyrs, a title developed by the oddly named Mac N Cheese Games, blending the best elements of Dead Space with a unique gameplay twist: players control a spacefaring nun whose sacred duty is to retrieve powerful relics from abandoned spacecraft and space stations. Sounds like something straight out of Warhammer with its Sisters of Battle, doesn’t it?
In the debut game from Mac N Cheese Games, players take on the role of a fully suited-up nun sent by the Church to scour the cosmos for relics of immeasurable power. However, much like in Dead Space, she is far from alone in the vast darkness. Lurking in the shadows is a horde of biomechanical zombies, hungry for fresh prey.
Void Martyrs features procedurally generated environments that challenge players to navigate through derelict corridors filled with hostile creatures—its eerie atmosphere reminiscent of Event Horizon. Resource management is crucial, with scavenging for ammo and crafting materials being essential for upgrading equipment. But what sets the game apart is its sanctity system, which affects character progression. Looting corpses diminishes sanctity, while sanctifying them increases it, unlocking “holy or cursed” items depending on the player’s actions.
The Stigma System and Roguelite Mechanics
Another intriguing aspect is the stigma system, which allows players to strengthen their character in a “divine” manner by enduring various trials. And since the game follows a roguelite structure, death is not the end—each fallen warrior is replaced by another armed nun, ensuring a continuous cycle of progress and escalating challenges.
For now, Void Martyrs has a Steam page and a trailer available, but Mac N Cheese Games has confirmed that the title will officially launch in August without an early access phase, delivering the full experience from day one.
