After Warner Bros.’ recent struggles in gaming, there’s finally a glimmer of hope. The teams behind Injustice and Batman Arkham are already deep into their next projects, with James Gunn and Peter Safran directly involved in shaping their future.
Warner Bros.’ video game division has been in rough shape lately. With the colossal failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the devastating news of the Wonder Woman game’s cancellation and three studio closures, many fans have lost faith in the company. However, amidst the negativity, James Gunn and Peter Safran have confirmed that they are working closely with two of the industry’s most renowned studios, Rocksteady and NetherRealm, to push DC gaming forward.
The DC Studios CEOs told ComicBook that they are actively participating in discussions with the developers of Injustice and Batman: Arkham, keeping a close eye on the evolution of these projects. “We work very closely with JB Perrette, who runs that division,” Safran explained, emphasizing that this kind of collaboration is entirely new for Warner Bros.
Are DC Movies and Games About to Merge?
“We’ve already sat down with them and talked about the characters and stories that interest both us and them,” Safran added. Meanwhile, Gunn confirmed that they have already seen the games in their early stages. In fact, the director of the upcoming Superman film hinted that he wants to ensure a stronger synergy between films and video games—a strategy that has worked well for several parallel projects.
Neither DC Game Will Be Released Anytime Soon
Unfortunately, neither of these games is arriving anytime soon. One of the most anticipated projects was Wonder Woman, a title in development at Monolith Productions that aimed to bring a fresh take on the Themysciran warrior. It was the only major DC game in the works that fans could look forward to. But with its cancellation and the studio’s closure, the future of DC gaming now rests on the creators of Arkham and Injustice. Given the current circumstances, however, we likely won’t see either game until the end of the decade.
As for Rocksteady, the team suffered a major setback with the failure of its live-service approach. While Warner Bros. still trusts the British studio—hence the rumors of a new Batman title—current reports suggest that they are collaborating with Avalanche Studios on a potential director’s cut of Hogwarts Legacy. If true, this would mean that their next major project is still in its infancy.
