Doug Cockle, who voiced Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, has also appeared in Larian Studios’ game, but until now it’s been shrouded in mystery!
Doug Cockle, of The Witcher fame, had an important but somewhat hidden role in Baldur’s Gate 3. In case you haven’t played Larian’s masterpiece yet, the following will spoil the third chapter of the game and the origin of Dark Urge, so read at your own risk.
Cockle plays no less a role in Baldur’s Gate 3 than Bhaal, the Lord of Murder. This bloodthirsty deity was present in the first two Baldur’s Gate games, and everything happened because of him. He still plays a large role in the story of the third game, as he is the patron or father of the player-controlled characters Orin the Red and Dark Urge. However, you will only hear Cockle’s voice if you play as Dark Urge.
The Lord of Murder takes on the role of mouthpiece for Sceleritas Fel, the goblin butler, and then gives the Dark Urge player characters a final ultimatum. Either reject Bhaal outright or rejoin the team. It’s a real play-against-type moment for Cockle, who is completely absorbed in his dark, angry disdain. It’s typical of Larian that they’ve made such a great game that secrets like this must still be lurking in Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s no coincidence that the game has won many Game of the Year awards, nor is it a coincidence that Larian has more players in 2024 than in the year of its release. It’s a rarity, but it also proves that the Belgian studio has really put a great game on the table – one of the legendary games of the CRPG genre!
The story of Cockle and The Witcher didn’t end with the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its two add-ons. Geralt will also appear in The Witcher IV, with Cockle reprising his role.
