For some, Fortnite is the perfect game; for others, it’s a problem. Nearly half of all gaming time in the United States is spent on live-service games. By January 2025, just 10 titles had dominated the entire market.
Live-service games have exploded into the gaming industry with overwhelming force, evolving constantly and keeping millions of players engaged. These titles are designed to stay relevant with frequent updates, seasonal events, and ongoing content. Games like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Roblox have completely redefined how players interact with this type of gaming experience.
However, their massive success has overshadowed traditional releases, creating a landscape where a handful of giants monopolize players’ time, attention, and spending. According to a recent report by Circana, a firm analyzing US game sales, over 40% of all playtime on current-gen consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X|S) in January 2025 was dedicated to just 10 live-service games.
This figure highlights not only their immense popularity but also the near-impossibility of new releases competing in a market almost entirely dominated by live-service giants. And if that statistic wasn’t surprising enough, here’s another: Mat Piscatella (via Gamespot) reports that over 70% of active users played at least one of these 10 titles during January 2025.
