Take-Two-owned Rockstar Games is adding another studio to its roster, and with it, the name of its team.
Rockstar Games has announced the acquisition of Sydney-based Video Games Deluxe and the renaming of the team to Rockstar Australia. Video Games Deluxe was founded by Brendan McNamara. McNamara was previously the founder of Team Bondi (a studio that previously worked on LA Noire). Video Games Deluxe previously worked with Rockstar on the 2017 re-release of L.A. Noire and L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files (which was VR).
Video Games Deluxe also worked on updates for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for iOS, Android, and current-gen consoles, which essentially brings McNamara back directly to Rockstar, though the developer in question hasn’t really moved on. In a press release, Rockstar Games publishing director Jennifer Kolbe wrote that they have worked closely with Video Games Deluxe for years and are excited to be a direct part of Rockstar under their new name.
McNamara added that it has been an honor to work closely with Rockstar Games over the past decade. They are happy to be part of Rockstar and will continue to strive to make the best games possible. Of course, the big question is what, as there is no information on that yet. The logical thing would be for L.A. Noire to get a sequel, but of the many franchises that have been associated with Rockstar, there have been some that didn’t make it (Bully being one of them).
Rockstar has a lot of franchises that haven’t gotten new installments recently. For example, there’s Midnight Club. Rockstar Australia, under its new name, will likely begin work on finishing development of Grand Theft Auto VI. That game is already nearing the end of its development, with a release sometime in the fall for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
