The system requirements for MercurySteam’s recently announced game have also surfaced, so there’s plenty to report.
An interview with the developers has surfaced on the Epic Games Store blog, and they’ve emphasized that the focus is not on fancy spells and RPG-like stats, but on how players’ weapons and abilities will evolve. As we’ve written before, blacksmithing will be an important aspect of the gameplay: using unique combinations of materials to create a variety of weapons (see image below). You’ll only use your weapons when necessary, because even hitting barrels will wear them out (so there will be a durability bar). There will be a chaotic movement style in combat to keep you on your toes rather than learning movement patterns. There will be no story-centric Blades of Fire that constantly holds players’ hands.
“You definitely can’t turn Aran into a magic god at the end of Blades of Fire. There are a lot of spectacular things you could do, have your weapon shoot fireballs or other things that are really spectacular. That is not our goal! Our goal is to make everything really important. You can fill the screen with visual effects and make the character feel really powerful, but we’re forced to make you feel powerful because you’re doing meaningful things – because you’re wielding this weapon, you created this weapon, the enemy has a long-range weapon, and I have to solve this problem.
Historical YouTubers talk about edges; they talk about balance, center of mass, grips and handling, and edge alignment. They’re not talking about agility, strength, endurance, intelligence, and dexterity. Those are not the stats. When we moved from a stat combo to a challenge mentality, balance became so much easier. We really just have to make sure that the enemy is strong in some things and weak in other things. There are all these other great RPGs that are about power complexity. That’s not what this game is about. Weapons don’t scale. Weapons don’t get better. You make a weapon – that weapon doesn’t actually get stronger. It wouldn’t make sense! Why is your grandfather’s katana so good? It was a great weapon when they made it, and it’s still a good weapon if you maintain it properly, but it’s really because it has a reputation, because of what it’s done,” said Joan Amat, the lead game designer.
