“This could be the end.” The director of The Last of Us finally speaks about Part 3, but the news isn’t good—it may never happen. While Neil Druckmann previously confirmed a new installment in February 2024, he now urges fans “not to bet on more of The Last of Us.”
Back in February 2024, fans rejoiced when Neil Druckmann, director of The Last of Us, confirmed that Naughty Dog was actively working on The Last of Us: Part 3. More than a year has passed since that announcement, and there has been no new information about the game’s story or mechanics. Many assumed the studio was quietly developing the sequel, but now, in an unexpected twist, Druckmann has cast doubt on whether the project will ever see the light of day.
With Season 2 of The Last of Us TV series on the horizon, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have been doing press interviews to promote the upcoming HBO episodes. During one such conversation with Variety, Druckmann made a surprisingly blunt statement regarding The Last of Us: Part 3: “I guess the only thing I could say is don’t bet that there will be more of The Last of Us. This could be the end.”
Following Druckmann’s comments, the fanbase has been quick to react, with some crafting theories about what could happen after the events of The Last of Us: Part 2. Others, however, believe that his words are deliberately ambiguous and don’t necessarily confirm the cancellation of Part 3. For now, the only option is to wait and see what Naughty Dog and Sony decide for the future of the franchise.
As mentioned earlier, Neil Druckmann is currently focused on promoting the second season of The Last of Us HBO series. While he is also involved in the development of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the new TV episodes are coming much sooner. The season premiere is set for April 14, and while it will follow the events of The Last of Us: Part 2, the creators have already warned that some of the “more brutal” scenes from the game have been cut.
