AMD FSR 4: The Next-Gen Upscaler Leaps Forward in Quality, Too! [VIDEO]

TECH NEWS – The new version of AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) can even outperform Nvidia’s older DLSS (Deep Learning SuperSampling) in terms of visual quality.

AMD’s FSR 4 is a big step forward in upscaling technology, delivering better image quality than the previous version, while rival Nvidia’s latest solution, DLSS 4, using the Transformer model, still looks like the benchmark. This is reported by Digital Foundry in the video embedded below. In it, we got our first look at AMD’s new upscaler, which for the first time works with machine/deep learning and is only available on the RDNA 4 architecture (i.e. currently only available on AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070).

In terms of performance, AMD FSR 4 takes a bigger hit than the previous iteration (i.e. FSR 3), as seen in the opening sequence of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, where the FSR 4 is about 8% slower than average on the performance preset. However, the “extra weight” in performance is worth it, according to Digital Foundry, as the new version of the technology addresses all of the major image quality issues of its predecessor. For example, particle effects no longer exhibit massive ghosting, transparent surfaces show detail that was lost in FSR 3, and the quality of objects with low relative motion now shows improved surface detail. The biggest leap forward is in complex motion, where AMD FSR 4 far surpasses previous versions of the upscaler.

AMD FSR 4 is not only a huge improvement over previous versions of the scaler. In certain scenes (such as still or slow moving objects) where AMD’s technology resolves more detail, it delivers better image quality than the older Nvidia DLSS using the CNN model! For moving objects, FSR 4 is comparable to the CNN model, and this is a surprisingly good result, as FSR 3 lagged far behind DLSS in image quality.

This gives AMD’s new graphics cards a great upscaling alternative, so Nvidia better watch its back…
