Doom: The Dark Ages: The Most Gore-y Weapon? The Skullcrusher!

According to id Software, one of the new Doom Slayer toys will cause the most violent destruction the gaming industry has ever seen.

PCGamer interviewed Hugo Martin, director of Doom: The Dark Ages. In videos of the game so far, we’ve seen a weapon that keeps pushing skulls into a wood chipper and shooting glass shards downward. Martin compared the Skullcrusher to the classic chaingun, but there are other differences. It’s more designed for melee, but on the other hand it fires a lot in a short time and we get accelerated when we fire the gun. There will be mods. One will improve the accuracy, but we haven’t seen that yet. That will be part of the leveling system of the weapon (similar to what we saw in the previous two parts of the reboot).

“This gun started out as the Bonecrusher, and then I think it evolved into the Skullcrusher. It does exactly what you think it does. It’s kind of a spread minigun that you can also turn into a long-range minigun. You get a speed boost and you get a rate of fire boost. So it goes from this kind of heavy, slow moving chain gun to, like, you just zip it around the arena. So it gives you a movement advantage, but you need it because it’s not very long-range.

The basic one that you’ve seen in the trailers, I kind of describe that as a weed whacker. That’s what it feels like when I’m walking around with it. And you have to get close, but when you get close to guys, we’ve done a lot of custom tuning on the gore and the falters. At this point it’s the third version of destructible demons, from 2016 to Eternal to now. We have, I think, the best gore in the industry. Our gore system is really where we spend a lot of money. That, coupled with the stuttering, the incredible animation, the physics, the sound design, the blood squibs, we really create that [Robocop] moment. It feels so good with the skull crusher because you’re running up to a bunch of fodder and you’re just holding them in place as their limbs come off and their bodies shake and they don’t fall until you let go of the trigger,” Martin said.

Doom: The Dark Ages will be released on May 15 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
