RuneScape: It Still Plans to Use Unreal Engine 5!

After Jagex recently trademarked a name for their open world franchise, we have learned what this project will be called.

Jagex is developing an open-world survival game, and it could be called RuneScape: Dragonwilds on Unreal Engine 5. The trademarks and job postings hint at a rich world, but details are scarce. Despite the fact that Jagex has cancelled a number of projects in its history, this one has been announced for closed testing, meaning the studio could be very serious about this one. Fans of the long-running MMORPG RuneScape will be both curious and surprised to see what the game, which will run on Epic Games’ technology, will look like…

The first hints of RuneScape: Dragonwilds were first revealed back in 2022, when Jagex first announced the existence of the open-world survival project. Then, last October, the team put out an official call for closed beta testers for the game. Apart from confirming that it is a survival game set in the RuneScape universe, not much else has been officially announced. Job postings on Jagex’s website have hinted at a rich and immersive world with large and complex areas, but details on gameplay and release date remain vague as the studio remains tight-lipped, to say the least.

A similar style of survival game to RuneScape could be Valheim. It was released in early access four years ago, in February 2021. The game, which is still in early access, is inspired by The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, and RuneScape, and features mechanics such as mining, woodcutting, crafting, and skill development systems. Jagex has previously dabbled in the survival genre, releasing the survival game SCUM in 2018, which has received mostly positive reviews on Steam with over 87,000 reviews.

Jagex has therefore officially trademarked RuneScape: Dragonwilds in the UK. The studio may have more to say about this soon.
