Gran Turismo has seen its share of legendary moments, but none come close to this one: a bizarre bug in the PlayStation 2 era pushes a car to reach speeds that defy the known laws of physics—tripling the universal speed limit.
Among racing franchises, few have left as deep a mark as Gran Turismo. As a long-time PlayStation exclusive, the series has carved out a legacy both in gaming history and in the real world, where its creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, even has a street named after him in the Spanish city of Ronda.
One of the standout titles in the franchise is Gran Turismo 3, the first entry on the PlayStation 2. Many fans fondly remember it for its visuals and gameplay, but few know that the highest top speed in the entire series can be achieved in this very installment—and not thanks to some high-powered supercar.
A Physics-Breaking Bug Sends the Suzuki Escudo Into Orbit
The record-setting speed comes from a glitch involving the Suzuki Escudo. According to JeuxVideo, players discovered that through a combination of tweaks and actions, the car can accelerate to speeds that are not only impossible in real life, but downright absurd by the laws of nature.
In the footage, the Escudo veers off-track and suddenly accelerates, gradually lifting its front end into the air. This is caused by a radical aerodynamic setup, which essentially turns the car into a rocket. Once airborne, the speed continues to rise uncontrollably, eventually reaching a critical value that causes the game engine to break: 2,147,483,647 miles per hour, or 3,456,039,922 km/h.
To put it into perspective, the speed of light is approximately 300,000 meters per second, or about 1,079,252,848 km/h. This means the glitched Escudo reaches a speed more than three times faster than light—an unthinkable feat in both science and gaming.
