Game Informer Rises from the Ashes!

One of the most important print magazines in the United States has been relaunched by Neill Blomkamp’s company.

Blomkamp is the co-founder of Gunzilla, a game development and blockchain company. The magazine was shut down by former owner GameStop last year (and we wrote about it) after the publication’s entire staff was laid off in August while the next issue of the magazine was being produced, and if that wasn’t enough, years of online content was lost. The now nearly 34-year-old magazine, which was the first source of gaming news and reviews for many in the United States, now has a new chance, as the publication’s website has been relaunched with all of its old articles, and a letter from editor-in-chief Matt Miller reveals that not only is the print magazine back, but all of the laid-off staff have returned to work on it.

“The entire team that worked together at the time of Game Informer’s closure has returned, from editorial to production and beyond. The entire team. Seriously – I’m still pinching myself. I am deeply grateful for the confidence and enthusiasm of the team at Gunzilla Games; they see the same potential in Game Informer that our team did, and their encouragement to do so ethically and free from outside pressure is commendable. Our intention is to bring the magazine back bigger and better than before, adding a host of membership and subscription benefits, including an expanded scope of our video, streaming, and feature coverage, while also broadening the range of experts and partnerships we tap to bring you these perspectives,” wrote Miller, who himself joined Game Informer in 2004.

The surprise revival was funded by Gunzilla, the new owner of Game Informer. Gunzilla’s co-founders are Blomkamp, former Warface head Alex Zoll and fintech entrepreneur Vlad Korolov. Gunzilla’s first game is a free-to-play shooter called Off The Grid. The company is also involved in blockchain. Gunz enables game developers to build player-driven economies by giving players full ownership of in-game assets as tradable NFTs.

According to Game Informer’s new owner, the magazine will enjoy editorial independence. In addition to restoring old web articles, the site has added new reviews of games that have since been released, and by registering a new account (old accounts are no longer available), users can access digital copies of more than a decade of back issues of Game Informer magazine.

Welcome back.
