After three years of development, the Dungeons & Dragons brand holders have pulled the plug on a major project. The Skeleton Key studio will now devote all efforts to a new RPG directed by Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s lead developer.
Over the past few years, Wizards of the Coast has authorized multiple video game projects under the Dungeons & Dragons umbrella. While the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3 reignited interest in RPGs, not every initiative was tied to the genre. One such project was a horror game being developed by Skeleton Key—a studio created in 2022 by Hasbro to expand its gaming portfolio. That title has now been officially cancelled, with the company outlining new development priorities.
The team has been reassigned to another project
Rumors about the cancellation began swirling when a Skeleton Key employee mentioned an “unfortunate cancellation” in a LinkedIn post. These reports have since been confirmed by a Wizards of the Coast representative. Speaking to Game File, Dan Ayoub, senior VP of digital games, clarified: “There were two titles in the pipeline, and the team has now fully shifted to the other project.”
New RPG underway with former Dragon Age director
The decision triggered some layoffs at Skeleton Key, although no exact figures were provided. Ayoub confirmed that “the majority” of staff were reassigned to work on a new role-playing game directed by Corinne Busche, best known for her leadership on Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Few details are available so far, but the project appears to be in early development and not expected anytime soon.
Busche’s involvement in a new RPG was already public knowledge. Back in January, she left EA after nearly two decades, stating she was presented with “an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.” Though her comments were brief, she revealed the upcoming title would be a CRPG with a focus on compelling character development—suggesting it could be tied to one of Wizards of the Coast’s many fantasy worlds.
