Returning to Hogwarts Legacy two years later makes the canceled DLC and expansions even more puzzling—one hidden mission alone proves there was still so much left to explore.
On February 6, 2023, I reviewed Hogwarts Legacy here, highlighting its success as the open-world RPG set in the Harry Potter universe everyone had been waiting for. With 34 million copies sold, the game quickly became one of Warner Games’ biggest triumphs, rivaling classics like Tetris and outperforming most entries in the Call of Duty series—a significant achievement, especially given Warner’s recent difficulties, including setbacks with Suicide Squad and studio closures.
With the Harry Potter franchise back in the spotlight thanks to news like Max’s casting of a new Dumbledore, I decided to revisit Hogwarts Legacy after more than two years. The experience was somewhat dispiriting, though not in the way you’d expect. After re-downloading the massive game files and resuming my journey as a Hufflepuff, it became clear how much untapped potential still lay within Hogwarts Legacy.
Logging back in, I was greeted by numerous cosmetic updates but was also surprised by a new mission titled “Own Business.” Initially a PlayStation-exclusive quest, it became available on Xbox after the exclusivity period ended.
The Best Mission You Probably Missed
Intrigued, I immediately tried this unexpected bonus mission and discovered it to be one of Hogwarts Legacy’s most inventive and entertaining quests. In Hogsmeade, near the famous wizarding school, an elf offers the chance to buy a shop for 1,500 coins. Predictably, there’s a catch—the shop is haunted by a troublesome poltergeist, forcing you to embark on a dungeon-crawling adventure beneath the building filled with puzzles and combat encounters.
This mission perfectly encapsulates the essence of Hogwarts Legacy: thrilling battles, magical beings, and meaningful gameplay additions, such as owning an actual shop. It’s baffling why Warner decided not to pursue additional expansions, despite clear evidence that players would have welcomed more content.
No Expansion, Just a Photo Mode
Warner Bros. recently restructured its gaming division, canceling the planned Definitive Edition that had been in development since October 2023. According to Jason Schreier, this definitive release was supposed to include significant DLC, but now neither the edition nor additional content will be released.
A sequel remains in development, but Hogwarts Legacy itself will only see minor updates, like the Summer 2024 patch introducing a photo mode and gameplay tweaks, along with a recent PC-exclusive modding update.
This contrasts sharply with the franchise’s ambitious roots—a 17-year-old Harry Potter open-world project once connected to Quake 3 demonstrates how grand the original plans were. While the future sequel may capitalize on renewed interest from the upcoming TV adaptation, it remains frustrating to see such a promising opportunity wasted.
