Netflix Boss Made a Pretty Shocking Statement About the PlayStation 6

“I’m not sure.” Netflix’s gaming division head suggests that children aged 8 to 10 are no longer dreaming about a PlayStation 6. According to Alain Tascan, the younger generation isn’t even considering Sony’s next-gen console.

The gaming industry is experiencing significant transformations, with major manufacturers preparing their next-generation consoles, while others question whether upcoming generations still aspire to traditional hardware. The younger demographic has long embraced devices offering instant access and touchscreen controls, which has prompted Netflix, recently venturing into gaming, to reflect on the industry’s future.

In a recent interview with The Game Business, Alain Tascan, Netflix’s head of gaming, expressed skepticism regarding the long-term relevance of traditional gaming consoles. When discussing the PlayStation 6—a console that has yet to be announced and is expected around late 2027 or 2028—Tascan highlighted a growing market shift towards accessibility and simpler gaming experiences, suggesting that today’s 8-10-year-olds might not even aspire to own a PS6.

What Do We Know About the PS6?

“When we talk about consoles, we’re envisioning a future where the platform itself becomes irrelevant. Look at younger generations: Do eight- and ten-year-olds today really dream of owning a PlayStation 6? I’m not convinced. They simply want to engage with digital screens wherever they are, whenever they want, even in a car. Sticking to the old model might actually hold us back,” Tascan stated. It’s worth noting Netflix previously shut down its AAA game development studio last year.

A few months ago, initial details about the PS6 emerged, confirming Sony’s strong focus on backward compatibility. Although Sony initially negotiated with Intel to manufacture internal chips, they ultimately chose AMD, as Intel’s solution posed risks to backward compatibility. The PS6 is expected to launch between late 2027 and 2028, though a specific reveal date remains unknown.
