Digital Foundry has confirmed that both the PlayStation 5 Pro and PlayStation 5 are affected by this issue, so Sony needs to take action…
Several games have experienced stuttering when played with VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) enabled and an unlimited frame rate. Digital Foundry has investigated the problem in several games and found that after 20-30 minutes of play, one of these games will stutter every 8 seconds or so (!), causing multiple frames to be dropped. The following games have been confirmed to cause the glitch on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro The Last of Us Part I, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Diablo IV, Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Metaphor: Refantazio, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.
Digital Foundry also tested Warhorse’s first-person, open-world RPG on the Xbox Series X and found no stuttering in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and since the tests were done on different TVs, they ruled out that it was due to the devices. However, other games did not seem to have this problem (God of War: Ragnarök, Gran Turismo 7, Immortals of Aveum, Dragon’s Dogma 2).
The twist is that the latter group includes games powered by the same engine as the titles in the first list. Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Resident Evil 4 Remake both run on Capcom’s RE engine, but the latter is problematic. As a result, Digital Foundry said it’s not inconceivable that some unaffected games could still suffer from the problem, but only if played for more than half an hour.
Switching to a different input (PC) seemed to eliminate the hissing after a while, but it’s not a perfect solution. When will Sony know there is a problem?
