75 employees have been laid off by Eidos Montréal, and their announcement is pretty much a sign that Playground Games’ game is nearing the end of development.
We’ve already heard that the Fable reboot will be released in 2026 instead of 2025. It was supposed to come out in the fall, and was pushed back to possibly early next year because of Grand Theft Auto VI. Development may have already been completed, and Playground Games may no longer need Eidos Montreal’s help, so the Canadian team may have been forced to cut back themselves, which they justified on social media with this announcement:
“Today we informed our studio staff that we will be laying off up to 75 valuable members as one of our mandates comes to an end. This is not a reflection on their dedication or skills, but unfortunately we don’t have the capacity to fully reassign them to our other ongoing projects and services. These very talented, highly experienced professionals will be entering the job market, and we are working to support them through this transition. Eidos Montréal remains committed to delivering on its other projects currently in development,” Eidos Montréal wrote.

Aside from the unfortunate (and now common) fact that people are losing their jobs, the wording of the message is suspect. So they have fulfilled a mandate, which could certainly be the Fable reboot. Unfortunately, this is not the first time they have let people go. Last January they had to lay off 97 employees after a new Deus Ex game was canceled. There’s no telling what else the studio might be working on these days. Their last game was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Last week, Crystal Dynamics (which worked closely with Eidos Montreal on Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Marvel’s Avengers) also announced the layoff of 17 employees. Crystal Dynamics is also helping Microsoft by working with The Initiative on the Perfect Dark reboot.
The only question is when we’ll hear more about the Fable reboot…
