Take-Two’s CEO Isn’t Concerned of AI-Generated Games!

He says they’re created from data that already exists, so they’re looking backward, not forward… and that’s not a bad idea.

Content-creating (generative) AI has been popping up in all sorts of industries in recent years, and video games have not been left out. American voice actors are locked in a battle for the rights to their own voices, studios (who could afford to pay for their services) would rather save money than pay artists, and many believe that AI is a better solution that will allow top executives to pocket even more money…

Of course, there are positives. Frame generation is useful, deep learning technology has a lot of tedious work that can be automated, but many executives in suits think generative AI is the future. Even game development may end up being the only way to go? Maybe, but Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, says there’s nothing to fear. That’s the message of an interview with Carolyn Dailey in her book The Creative Entrepreneur. Overall, Zelnick is quite enthusiastic about technology:

“I’m not worried about AI creating hits, because it’s built on data that already exists. It’s backward-looking. Big hits are forward-looking and have to be created out of nothing. Being the most creative means not just thinking outside the box, but having no box. Hire the best creatives and insist that they follow their passions. Encourage them to always try something new and stay away from derivative and copycat work… In Hollywood, it’s common to pitch your product as ‘it’s a combination of Spiderman meets Batman meets Back to the Future’… We don’t do that here; we want something you’ve never seen before,” Zelnick said.

Zelnick’s words stand in stark contrast to those of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. He has boasted that artificial intelligence will allow us to play a first-person shooter with aliens in ancient Rome, where we control Indiana Jones with a Monty Python-inspired comedy narrative.

He essentially said „no, thanks”.
