Switch had Mario Odyssey, the Switch 2 brings Donkey Kong Bananza. Nintendo’s iconic ape returns on July 17 with a fresh trailer, price tag, and an unexpected new twist: smashing the world into shape.
Nintendo surprised fans this week with the reveal of Donkey Kong Bananza, one of the most eye-catching exclusives for the upcoming Switch 2. The announcement came during the April 2nd Nintendo Direct, and the game already has a confirmed release date: July 17. Alongside its vibrant first trailer, we now have a few juicy gameplay details—though mystery still surrounds the developer’s identity, with both Nintendo’s Kyoto studio and Retro Studios being possible candidates.
Bananza looks like it could follow in the footsteps of Super Mario Odyssey, bringing 3D platforming back into the spotlight with that unmistakable Nintendo charm. This time, Donkey Kong’s world is more interactive than ever: he can terraform environments by digging through terrain or hurling objects at walls and ceilings to change the landscape. It’s not just about jumping—now it’s about reshaping the stage mid-level.
The trailer also showed off a brief side-scrolling sequence reminiscent of the classic Donkey Kong Country games. It’s unclear whether this was a one-off easter egg—like New Donk City in Odyssey—or a regular part of the gameplay loop. Nintendo is keeping details under wraps for now.
If you’re ready to go bananas, you won’t have to wait long after Switch 2 launches. Donkey Kong Bananza will release just a month later and will cost €69.99 for the digital version and €79.99 for the physical edition, putting it in the same price tier as Mario Kart World.
