HANDHELD NEWS – Asus and Microsoft have had a brief but striking Twitter exchange that confirms previous rumors…
The Xbox handheld known as Project Kennan has been teased by Asus with a video that pretty much confirms who will be producing the hardware that has yet to be officially announced. Asus ROG Global’s official Twitter profile has shared a new video teasing something new from the company. In the video, a ROG Ally can be seen next to an Xbox controller, strongly suggesting that Asus is indeed the company rumored to be producing the Xbox handheld that will be released later this year. Xbox’s Twitter profile has added fuel to the fire by responding with a rather revealing meme, so it seems almost certain that Asus will be producing the handheld that may be announced in June, during the E3 period (even though it’s not happening this year either).
The Xbox handheld, codenamed Project Kennan, will have a distinctly Xbox look (and thus a similar design sensibility), run full Windows, and focus on the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass. This hardware is just a small part of Microsoft’s next-generation plans, which also include a successor to the Xbox Series X and a full-fledged handheld to be released in 2027. Microsoft’s next-generation system is said to offer the biggest technological leap ever, but it remains to be seen how Microsoft will pull it off… and if it does, how future games will take advantage of it.
The existence of the Xbox handheld was certainly made possible by the Nintendo Switch. This led to the creation of the Steam Deck, which was followed by many other handheld PCs (such as the Asus ROG Ally or the Lenovo Legion Go). But none of this is official yet!
