NINTENDO NEWS – The US president could lead to price hikes not only for consoles, but also for PC components.
It took a few months, but Donald Trump’s tariffs are finally affecting gaming hardware, as pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 (due out in two months on June 5) have been delayed. The Japanese company told IGN: “Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not begin on April 9, 2025, in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update the timeline at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 remains unchanged,” the big N wrote.
Those outside the US can still prepare to pre-order. On the US website, the recommended retail price for the Nintendo Switch 2 remains at $450, while we can get the new console there for $500 with the Mario Kart World Tour version (you get the $80 game in this one). However, this is a suggested price. It’s almost certain that no one will stick to it, just like the prices of the new video cards have gone up in no time (although we reported yesterday that Amazon is trying to fight back against scalpers…).
If a company as big as Nintendo stops pre-orders, there is a fear that significant price changes will occur, which could make it difficult to fulfill pre-orders at the original MSRP. This could even lead to the console becoming more expensive elsewhere: it could even end up with Europe charging more for the Nintendo Switch 2, which would put it in a less favorable pricing position than it is now (it was reported yesterday that a Midia Research researcher had previously estimated the Japanese company’s new hardware to be slightly cheaper).
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be available from June 5, and delaying pre-orders for the console could set a painful precedent for PC hardware. As always, the whip will crack the average person’s wallet.
