While Capcom’s iconic franchise is known for its tense, confined spaces and psychological horror with minimal action, past films have taken a flashier, action-heavy route that felt worlds apart from the source material. But that’s about to change. A brand-new Resident Evil film is coming to theaters on September 18, 2026, and it will act as a full reboot, returning to the survival-horror roots of the franchise. It will be directed by Zach Cregger, known for his work on Barbarian, alongside screenwriter Shay Hatten, whose credits include John Wick and Ballerina. Cregger told IGN that the new movie will be “completely different from all previous installments.”

The New Resident Evil Will Break the Mold

Cregger’s vision is to craft a narrative that mirrors the games: following a lone protagonist who descends deeper into nightmare territory with each step forward. “There’s always that moment in a Resident Evil game where you’re stuck in a dark corridor, your health is low, there’s no way out, and you know something horrifying is waiting in the shadows.” That core feeling is what the film aims to replicate.

According to Deadline, Austin Abrams, known for his role in Euphoria, is in talks to direct the film. Production is expected to begin later this year, and more details about the PlayStation-co-produced project are likely to surface soon. While Capcom hasn’t made any official announcements yet, insiders suggest remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica might be in the works.
