Tomb Raider Gets Another Board Game Adaptation!

While Miss Croft is getting a new game courtesy of Crystal Dynamics and Amazon, she’s also going on the offensive in other formats.

The boardgame boom may be over, but that doesn’t mean everyone has left the genre behind, either from a player or publisher perspective. It does not mean that this sector of the industry is about to collapse. It’s no wonder that a Tomb Raider board game is in the pipeline, albeit one that will require crowdfunding.

Tomb Raider: The Crypt of Chronos will launch on Kickstarter in May. In the single-player or multiplayer game, famed treasure hunter Lara Croft searches the island of Kairos for an artifact that is said to hold the reins of time. It’s a bit like Citizen Sleeper in that Lara has a set of dice that can be assigned to different actions (e.g. crafting, exploration) each turn. It’s a bit odd to have crafting in a board game (and a bit like Tomb Raider), but the idea is interesting.

There will also be bosses. One of them is a bear that can regenerate. The normal enemies will be armed mercenaries sent by Natla Tech, who also want to get the artifact. There will also be Roman legionaries and some dogs. All of them are represented in quite detailed plastic. Almost all foundations have a fallen pillar and/or some mine ore so that the character can pose dramatically with one leg raised.

So far it looks like Tomb Raider: The Crypt of Chronos will have two game modes. The Adventure Book mode will be a series of 20-60 minute story missions, while the Campaign mode will be a sort of open-world, free-roaming through random locations. This will take about three hours to complete. However, Tomb Raider Legends has already tried its hand at the genre a few years ago, when four classic-looking Lara’s competed against each other. That game was published by Square Enix. Tomb Raider: The Crypt of Chronos is a project by Iconiq Studios, who acquired the license. They have previously created tabletop games based on the They Live and Saw movies, as well as characters from Silent Hill 2 and Street Fighter V. The Kickstarter starts on May 27.
