TECH NEWS – “I thought they were garbage,” says Matt Bromberg, CEO of Unity, referring to metaverse platforms. He called the entire concept “idiotic,” but believes that Augmented Reality headsets will soon be everywhere.

The metaverse was once hailed as the next big digital leap. It promised a future where people could work, play, and socialize in fully immersive virtual environments through avatars and VR headsets. Companies like Meta poured billions into building this new reality, hyping up a world where virtual presence would be the norm. But for most people, that future never arrived—it was a mirage.

Criticism hasn’t just come from disillusioned users. Industry insiders have also spoken out—most notably Unity CEO Matt Bromberg, who pulled no punches in an interview with The Verge. “I never really believed in the metaverse. As a developer, I saw these platforms and just thought they were garbage,” he said bluntly.

According to Bromberg, these virtual world experiences were already attempted in gaming long ago. “It reminded me of the stuff we tried to build 15 years back. It never worked then, and it won’t work now. All those metaverse startups just confused the hell out of me.” (via PCGamer). Despite the failure of virtual worlds, Bromberg sees massive potential in Augmented Reality—where user interaction feels seamless and the hardware isn’t a burden.

Bromberg is convinced AR will be the next major tech shift. “Forget the stupid metaverse hype. The future is in mass adoption of AR devices. I 100% believe in it. Give it a couple of years—AR glasses will be everywhere.” He elaborated: “Voice control powered by AI, long battery life, and the ability to overlay useful information in your field of view—this combination will be a game changer.”
