Exciting news for Death Stranding fans: Hideo Kojima has found the director for the long-awaited film adaptation. However, there’s still no official release date for the sci-fi production.
While Kojima Productions and Sony have set June 26 as the launch date for Death Stranding 2, the game’s sequel isn’t the only project tied to the post-apocalyptic universe crafted by Hideo Kojima. A film adaptation is already in development, with indie studio A24 onboard. And now we know who will be directing it.
According to Deadline, Michael Sarnoski has been tapped to both write and direct the movie. His task: to adapt Kojima’s surreal world—which already featured big-name Hollywood talent in the games—into a cinematic experience. As the publication notes, “the film will explore the enigma of Death Stranding, a cataclysmic series of events that blurred the boundary between life and death, spawning terrifying beings in a fractured, crumbling world.”
From the Man Behind A Quiet Place: Day One
Sarnoski may be a fresh name to some, but horror aficionados will recognize him. He directed last year’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, and earned critical acclaim for his earlier work Pig, starring Nicolas Cage. His next film, The Death of Robin Hood, will feature Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, and Bill Skarsgård in a reimagining of the classic legend.
For now, that’s all that’s known. The cast hasn’t been announced, and details on the production timeline are scarce. Although the project began development more than two years ago, it’s likely gone through some creative restructuring—meaning fans may be in for a long wait before anything hits the big screen.
