Switch 2 Earns High Praise from Devs Behind Hogwarts Legacy and Civilization 7

Studios behind blockbuster hits like Hogwarts Legacy and Civilization 7 are already applauding Nintendo’s next-gen hardware. Firaxis Games and Avalanche Software both shared how impressed they are with the Switch 2’s performance and development tools.

Nintendo has officially revealed the Switch 2, launching on June 5, and the lineup of launch titles is already turning heads. Not only will first-party games be featured, but major third-party titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Civilization 7, Hogwarts Legacy, and Split Fiction are confirmed as well. Developers from around the world are jumping on board — unsurprising, considering the original Switch, despite selling over 150 million units, struggled to handle today’s most demanding games. So what’s it like to develop for this new console? According to early adopters, it’s a great experience.

Dennis Shirk, executive producer of Civilization 7, described the process to Game File (via GamesRadar+) as “easy”. “Their SDK is excellent, the customer service, the developer support, and the relationships with Nintendo are all great,” he said. The Firaxis team is “extremely happy” with the console’s capabilities.

“We were able to make it feel like a mid-range PC — it’s got enough power,” Shirk explained. “Nintendo wanted Civ on this platform from the start because it was a great way to showcase the new Joy-Con 2’s mouse support.” He added, “It fits perfectly with our PC player base, especially with crossplay functionality.” Firaxis began working on the Switch 2 port in October of last year.

Avalanche Software also shared their take on porting Hogwarts Legacy to Switch 2. “We originally started with the Switch version,” said senior producer Jimmie Nelson. “We quickly got really good results,” he noted. “But we realized we could deliver a much higher-quality product by using higher-resolution assets, enhanced textures, lighting, and world streaming.” All of these upgrades are included in the launch-day version for Switch 2.

Some Switch Exclusives Will Return as “Switch 2 Edition” Releases

Beyond third-party titles, Nintendo is revamping its own exclusives for the new console. Games like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Kirby and the Forgotten Land will be re-released as “Switch 2 Edition” versions. These will come with enhancements, new features, and even additional content — but at a premium price point compared to their original releases.
