‘Dune 3’ Casts a New Lead Villain, and It’s Another Batman Star

MOVIE NEWS – Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-winning sci-fi epic is expanding once again, and the third chapter in the Dune saga will introduce a major new character – this time, played by yet another actor known for donning the cape and cowl.

According to Deadline, director Denis Villeneuve and his production team are currently in talks with Robert Pattinson, star of The Batman and Mickey 17, to take on a prominent role in the upcoming Dune: Messiah. While the exact nature of his character is still under wraps, reports suggest it’s the most significant new part being cast for the film. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Pattinson is likely being eyed for the role of Scytale, the primary antagonist introduced in Frank Herbert’s novel Messiah, on which the film is based.

If confirmed, Pattinson would join the returning cast that includes Timothée Chalamet (Paul Atreides), Zendaya (Chani), and Jason Momoa (Duncan Idaho). This would mark the third major tentpole project Pattinson is involved with this year, as he’s also filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and is expected to begin shooting Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II later this year. The scheduling might become a tight squeeze, especially with delays already affecting the Batman sequel, but that’s something for Pattinson and his team to juggle. His potential Dune role comes after Austin Butler’s portrayal of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the central villain in Dune: Part Two.

What to Expect From Dune: Messiah?

Filming for Dune: Messiah is set to begin this summer, with a theatrical release scheduled for December 18, 2026. While the full cast lineup hasn’t been revealed yet, confirmed returns include Chalamet, Zendaya, and Momoa, with strong speculation surrounding the return of Josh Brolin and Florence Pugh. As for Momoa’s character, curious fans should beware of spoilers – his return might come with unexpected twists, possibly playing a different version than the one audiences know and love.

The plot is expected to pick up approximately 12 years after the second film’s events, mirroring the original novel’s timeline. This time jump aligns with the dramatic ending of Dune: Part Two, setting the stage for a more mature ensemble as Paul Atreides fully embraces his role as the “Lisan al Gaib.” According to Nexus Point News, Chani’s twin children, Leto and Ghanima, will also play a role in the story. Additionally, the outlet notes that if Pattinson signs on as Scytale, it could delay his involvement in The Batman Part II until early 2026. In the film, he would portray a Face Dancer from the mysterious Bene Tleilax faction.
