NINTENDO NEWS – The big N doesn’t really sell their consoles at a loss, and their development budget isn’t that big… so isn’t that a bit greedy on their part?
During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the company was very sneaky about hiding the prices of their games, and didn’t even reveal the price of the handheld. After the show, it was revealed that anyone who wants to buy Mario Kart World on cartridge will be charged $80 in the US or €90 in Europe. And all of this was decided before US President Donald Trump took his tariff war to a new level, which is why the big N has delayed Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in America.
Bill Trinen, Vice President of Product and Gaming Experience at Nintendo of America, defended the company’s decision to push the price of the game even higher in an interview with IGN, which I’m sure others will follow, and we’re certainly at the point where Grand Theft Auto VI will be $100:
“I would say it’s less about the strategy of pricing Mario Kart World, it’s more like whenever we look at a particular game, we just look at what’s the experience and what’s the content and what’s the value? Mario Kart World, I think especially as you see from the Nintendo Direct, not to give you any hints or anything, I would say tune into our Mario Kart Direct to see what, maybe you’ll be able to find out. But honestly, this is a game that is so big and so vast that there will be so many little things to discover. And there’s still some other secrets that I think when people finally buy the game and play it, they’ll find that this is probably the richest Mario Kart experience they’ve ever had. We just look at each individual game and we look at the content and the value of that game, and then we say, “What’s the right price for the value of that entertainment? I think overall, our general approach is really just to focus on what the content is, what the value is, and what the appropriate price is based on that,” Trinen said.
Mario Kart World will be released on June 5th as one of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch titles.
