HANDHELD NEWS – Another handheld is now essentially known to be made by someone else, but Microsoft is still keeping its next-generation handheld plans a big secret…
Xbox boss Phil Spencer mentioned the Xbox handheld in an interview with YouTube host iJustine. The interview took place on the occasion of Microsoft’s 50th birthday (Apple just turned 49, so the Redmond company has a bit of a head start…). Let’s see what he had to say about the handheld, which by the way will be another device this year, but we’ll come back to that…
“I really love the work the team has done to put Xbox everywhere and our marketing campaign around it. We always tend to just follow where we see people playing, and it’s just been amazing to see the number of people who are now playing Xbox through the cloud. It’s literally tens of millions of hours every single month and it’s growing dramatically. Obviously, people are finding Xbox on PC and we have a lot of work to do there.
We’ve been teasing and talking about handhelds and I’m very excited about that because we both travel a lot and sometimes you can’t always take your console or my whole gaming desktop with you. But it’s really about building the experience around the person and that’s the part I’m most excited about. It’s not one device at the center, it’s not one game, it’s the player at the center and making sure that all of your games are available, all of your save games, all of your entitlements are available wherever you go so that gaming can continue to grow as a form of entertainment,” Spencer said.
According to the latest rumors (which we have already reported), the Project Kennan could be released this year, and it could be produced by Asus. The company shared a teaser on Twitter, to which Xbox responded with an obvious meme, so it’s almost certain that Asus is the manufacturer. But Spencer probably wasn’t referring to this handheld, but to the one made by Microsoft, which is supposed to arrive in 2027, and in the meantime the successor to the Xbox Series X could hit stores.
It’s going to be an interesting time…
