Some PlayStation 5 owners are starting to see animated backgrounds on their consoles, thanks to a quiet rollout by Sony. These new wallpapers, tied to 13 different PlayStation titles, are currently only available to select users through the Welcome Center.
For many gamers, customizing the console is more than just visual flair—it’s about expressing identity and enhancing the entire user experience. Themes, icons, and animated elements give players a deeper connection to the system they use daily. Since the PS5’s launch, Sony has taken gradual steps to expand personalization options, and now animated wallpapers may be the next big upgrade.
PS5 Animated Wallpapers
According to social media reports, Sony has begun a limited rollout of exclusive animated wallpapers for the PS5 dashboard. These new visuals are available only to a small group of users and expand the selection in the Welcome Center. Players can choose from dynamic backgrounds inspired by 13 different PlayStation games, including titles like Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, and Demon’s Souls.
While it’s been rumored for a while that Sony is exploring ways to bring back custom wallpapers and improve the user interface, this rollout is the clearest sign yet. Although it’s not the full-fledged theme system from the PS3 and PS4 era, it’s a move toward deeper personalization and variety on the PS5.
Last year, Sony released an update that allowed users to change the Welcome Center background and adjust widget layouts. In addition, classic PlayStation themes celebrating the brand’s 25th anniversary were briefly made available. With animated backgrounds now in testing, a wider release seems likely in the near future.
