“Personally, I was a little disappointed,” admitted former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida, who believes the new Nintendo console doesn’t offer anything revolutionary. In his view, the Switch 2 is simply a “better Switch”—but a far cry from the kind of innovation Nintendo used to stand for.
The reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 sparked intense debate across social media. While some criticized game prices or hardware specs, others—like Shuhei Yoshida, the former head of SIE Worldwide Studios—were more concerned with what the console means for Nintendo’s identity. Speaking on the latest Nintendo Direct, Yoshida questioned whether the company still stands for bold new ideas or if it’s merely following industry trends.
Yoshida had already suggested that only The Duskbloods saved the showcase from mediocrity. Now, in a new interview with the Easy Allies podcast (via Eurogamer UK), he doubled down on his stance: “To me, it felt like a contradictory message from Nintendo. I think they’re losing their identity.”
“Nintendo, for me, has always been about creating new experiences—hardware and games built together to do something unique. But the Switch 2 is just a better Switch, right?” he explained. “It has a bigger screen, a faster processor, 4K at 120 FPS. They even brought out a hardware specialist like other companies do!” Yoshida sees the console as a message that “they’re just doing what others have already been doing.”
“What they showed was kind of like… meh”
Yoshida feels the Switch 2 isn’t aimed at hardcore gamers but rather existing fans of Nintendo. “Sure, it’s great if you only play on Nintendo hardware,” he acknowledged. “You’ll finally get to play amazing titles like Elden Ring. But for core gamers who already own a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC… the third-party games shown? In theory, it’s great that they’re coming to Nintendo, but what they presented felt like… meh.”
Regardless, the true reception of the Switch 2 will be clear once it officially hits shelves on June 5. Nintendo has already shared its launch lineup, so we won’t have to wait long to see how the console performs in the market.
